Interview Process

The interview process for a software engineer can take from couple of weeks to couple of months.

Stage 1: Phone screen with recruiter.
Stage 2: Timed online assessment
Stage 3: Video interview with Karat
Intuit outsources the first technical interview session to Karat. The interview requires screen sharing, because they will ask about the approach the candidate used to solve the first round coding challenge. There is also another coding question.
Stage 4: At-home coding assignment to present at onsite
Stage 5: Onsite interview
The onsite interview consists of the code review/presentation, technical interviews, and behavioral questions.

The interview process for a data scientist at Intuit takes around 2 weeks.

Stage 1: Phone screen with recruiter
Stage 2: Phone interview with a team manager or one of the team members
Stage 3: Data science code challenge (3-4 hours).
Stage 4: Onsite interview
The onsite includes an hour long presentation on the code challenge/past work and then 1-on-1 interviews. The questions are on machine learning and open questions.

The interview process for a product/experience/UX UI designer takes about 2-3 weeks.

The onsite is with 2 interviewers. The questions are about the candidate's design process, communication skills, and technical skills.

The interview process for a product manager takes around 2 weeks.

Stage 1: Phone screen with recruiter

Stage 3: Onsite interview
Before the onsite, the candidate is asked to prepare an hour long presentation to introduce him/herself, select a work that he/she is most proud of, and a case study. The onsite is a full-day interview with cross-functional team members representing product management, marketing, and engineering. Questions include a case study, consulting type questions, product management questions, and behavioral questions.

Interview Questions
  • Given 2 strings find if 1 string is the substring of the other.
  • Given a series of meeting times, find the time slot that is available to everyone.
  • Craft a demo on data processing, coin change (dynamic programming problem), and technical questions on data processing.
  • Implement a linked list.
  • How to process a string of brackets and determine if they are balanced, ie: all match eg: {[]}()({[]})
  • Graph traversal.
  • Matrix manipulation.
  • Java polymorphism, reverse a string, and kth largest number in an array.
  • Given a matrix of 1s and 0s with 0s representing a rectangle, find its coordinates and dimensions.
  • Hashmap - Explain hashcode() and equals(). What happens if both are overridden? Can objects be stored in Hashmaps?
  • Given a mathematical expression as a string, return an int computing the value of the expression. EX: 1+3-6 = -2
  • BT traversal related questions
  • Debugging an implementation of queue.
  • Implementing a cache.
  • How to store all numbers from 0 to 10000 if the numbers are randomly given to you.
  • Design LFU cache.
  • Design a debt app.
  • Find the longest common subarray between 2 arrays of strings.
  • Implement a slight variation of a topological sort.
  • Describe a machine learning algorithm.
  • How does boosting work?
  • Strategies for solving a machine learning problem.
  • How would you design a ranking system?
  • What kind of design challenges do you enjoy most?
  • Describe a situation where you had to lead a group that had difficulties. How did you handle it?
  • Defend the decisions in your portfolio
  • What technological trend do you see Intuit taking on in the future and how will it apply it to its growth?
  • Design an experiment for Quickbooks Online.
  • Describe a time you made an unpopular decision.
  • What is your favorite product? How would you improve it?
  • What metrics would you use to determine a successful product?
  • Case study: recommending how to market a new product.
  • Describe some of the best practices/strategies you use for marketing data analysis and the different methodologies for devising marketing analysis plans.
  • How have you had to deal with customer expectations in the past?
  • Consulting type question like profit estimation.
