A review of HireClub as a career coaching tool

What does HireClub do?

The mission of HireClub is to help people grow in their careers. They do this through career coaching and community. Users can sign up for a subscription or pay by service. These single sessions range in price and topics include career coaching, resume help, negotiation, and mock interviews. The website also has a job board which features positions that community members are hiring.

There is also a closed Facebook group with almost 29,000 members. This group was started in 2011 with 25 people and has since grown, picking up speed mainly in the past few years. Users can only join the group by invite and recommendation from a current member. Once new members join the group, they can post about positions they or their company is hiring for or they can post about themselves as long as they have created a profile on the HireClub site and link to that. There are a fair amount of guidelines that are in place to ensure the community remains productive and helpful.

Who is HireClub for?

HireClub is for anyone who is looking to make a change in their career. On their website, they focus on three main goals: finding a job through resume help, getting a raise through promotion and negotiation tactics, and becoming a better leader through management training. Based on these goals, it seems like HireClub is more suited for people who have been in the industry for some time and are looking to either enhance their job search or advance their careers. Their overall coaching is more generally focused, with little to no technical interview preparation.

What does HireClub cost? How much work is involved?

There are a few options for people who are interested in HireClub. If you can land a referral into the Facebook group, that is, of course, free. Users in the group are asked to create a HireClub profile and introduce themselves to the other members. If you are looking to use the group for networking, you are required to make a HireClub profile.

For those that are looking for career coaching, the subscription service offers 4 plans. Basic is $99/month and provides users with 30 minutes of career coaching per month. The Pro plan gives 60 minutes of career coaching for $159/month, the Ultimate gives 120 minutes for $299/month, and the Platinum plan gives 240 minutes per month for $549/mo.

The individual sessions are on a pay per use system. The least expensive is a resume review for $59, then mock interviews, career coaching, and salary negotiation sessions for $119, followed by a resume rewrite for $299.

Ratings and reviews

On the HireClub website, they have a lot of positive reviews from people who have benefitted from the career coaching. It seems like after each session, users are asked to write a review of the coach and the service and each career coach is rated and has reviews associated with them. They are growing quickly, so some coaches have not been reviewed yet.

Other than on their own site, it is difficult to find reviews online.

Alternatives to HireClub

Korn Ferry Advance is an alternative to HireClub. A fairly new career coaching subscription service, KF Advance helps candidates with all aspects of their career, from resume to promotions. They are a subsidiary of Korn Ferry, a global consulting firm focused on strategic and organizational change, which also helps place candidates in roles at their partner companies.

The Muse also has a career coaching option for people who feel lost or stuck in their career and need a change. They offer variations in level of coaching that correlate with price.

How does HireClub compare to Pathrise?

HireClub works with people to help them advance their careers – oftentimes focusing on developing better leadership tools, getting a promotion, or transitioning to a new field. They mainly work with less technical positions.

Pathrise is a full service organization, working with candidates through all stages of the job search, with a focus on positions in tech. Fellows work with an advisor that is specific to their industry (software engineering, product design, product management, marketing, strategy, and operations) as well as a career advisor in 1-on-1 sessions.

Specifically, we work with candidates on optimizing their resumes and online profiles, preparing for technical and behavioral interviews, as well as negotiation tactics for offers. Through workshops, technical peer assessments, and our forum, fellows get an opportunity to meet and collaborate with people like them. We represent the candidates, which means that we can help connect them with any and all companies.

We don’t charge anything up front, so when you are looking for your first job or when you are in between positions, you don’t need to worry about money until you are hired and working again. Fellows can interact with their advisors as much as they need to (within reason) and our scheduling is extremely flexible, meaning they can get help at the exact time that they need it.

Pathrise is a career accelerator that works with students and young professionals 1-on-1 so they can land their dream job in tech. With our tips and guidance, our fellows have seen their applications responses triple and their interview performance scores double.

If you want to work with any of our advisors 1-on-1 to get help with your technical interviews or with any other aspect of the job search, become a Pathrise fellow.
