A review of Paysa as a salary comparison tool

What does Paysa do?

Paysa is an online tool that helps people determine their worth. It can be used when negotiating salaries at new positions or raises in their current roles. Users can search for average salaries across companies, roles, and locations. Then, they analyze their offers based on that market data. They also break down the compensation into base, equity, bonus, and signing bonus. This is helpful for negotiation because candidates can get a sense of where the company is likely to move the needle based on their averages.

Beyond salaries, Paysa also includes information on the skills needed for each role. In addition, they include the types of degrees those employees hold and how much experience they tend to have. This information is important for job-seekers so that they know they have the right background to apply for the position. Finally, they offer graphs outlining the diversity at the company – age, ethnic makeup, and gender for the role.

Current employees can use Paysa to determine if they should ask for a raise. They enter their title, company, location, and start date as well as their base salary, annual bonus, retention bonus, and equity so that they can be evaluated against market value. With all of the information, Paysa is able to break down where they are being underpaid and what they should request from their manager. Similarly, they can evaluate an offer by entering the same information.

Who is Paysa for?

With resources for both candidates and current employees, Paysa can benefit almost anyone who is looking for help with their negotiation. The majority of their data is related to the tech industry.

What does Paysa cost? How much work is involved?

For users, Paysa is free. Most of the information can be seen without creating an account, but for those who want to personalize their experience, including finding jobs that match their skillset, they can create an account using Facebook, Google, GitHub, LinkedIn, or email and upload their resume. This job-matching tool is new to Paysa and currently does not work very well.

Ratings and reviews

The main reviews online regarding Paysa are about the accuracy of their compensation data. A few people have mentioned that the salaries listed on Paysa are too high, especially when location is taken into account. Reviewers have mentioned that the demographic information is also inaccurate for some companies.

Their founding team is fairly responsive to these comments on Reddit & Quora and provide explanations for the numbers on their site.

Alternatives to Paysa

  • Glassdoor is probably the most well known alternative tool for people who are interested in compensation comparisons. Their salary calculator gives users a breakdown of average compensation for a role based on the location. You can also enter your own information for a personalized calculator.
  • Users can also take a look at Payscale. They can enter a job title, years of experience, and location as well as technologies, certifications, school, degree, and other demographic information to get a personal pay snapshot where they see their market value and variable options. They can also search by position, company, school, and degree to see average salaries.
