A review of The Python Academy data science bootcamp

Hi, I’m Olga! I have years of experience in data science, most recently at eBay and now I work as an industry mentor at Pathrise, helping data scientists land a great role through technical workshops and 1-on-1s. Check out my review of The Python Academy.

What does The Python Academy do?

The Python Academy is the newest and largest US-based Python training program for aspiring data scientists. They offer 11+ online courses with a flexible, part-time schedule. Students participate in live lectures, hands-on projects, assignments, exams, and weekly mentoring sessions. The program currently boasts an 86% placement rate in just 12 weeks. If grads don’t land a job in 1 year, they get a 50% tuition refund.

Their flagship data science bootcamp aims to teach students the skills they need to get a data science job in 12 weeks. Classes meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6pm to 8pm EST. This bootcamp includes every short course and every skill certification on the platform. First, students analyze data with Python as they work with pandas, NumPy, seaborn, SQL, databases, and RPA (robotic process automation). The curriculum also covers more advanced Python skills like app development, machine learning, and predictive modeling.

Students in the data analytics courses meet for 6 weeks from 6pm to 8pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The curriculum teaches students to master complex data analysis with Python. Students learn the same core content of the flagship course with the exception of machine learning, which can be taken after grads successfully complete the class. 9 other shorter courses are also available for students who want to learn a specific data skill like app deployment or RPA (robotic process automation).

To complete a specific course, students must pass a final exam. Grads then get a certification for each course that they pass. Career services are also available for an extra $500. Career coaches help students write resumes, craft cover letters, and prepare for the job search. Students then participate in mock interviews as they mingle with the alumni network. Upon completion of the program’s placement test, grads get access to staffing partners who will help them land a job. Grads who don’t get a data science job within a year get 50% of tuition costs refunded.

Who is The Python Academy for?

People with little to no coding experience who are looking to launch a new data science career could benefit from The Python Academy. The flagship bootcamp could be a good fit for people seeking a comprehensive curriculum that covers both fundamental and advanced Python skills in-depth. Students seeking fairly extensive career services with an ISA and a partial job guarantee could also be a good match for the bootcamp.

What does The Python Academy cost? How much work is involved?

Tuition for the flagship data science course is $4,900 upfront. The data analytics course costs $2,000. Shorter individual courses cost about $500 each. Students can pay full tuition upfront for a discount or pay in interest-free monthly installments. The GI Bill is also accepted.

Students in the flagship courses also get access to an income share agreement (ISA) with a $490 deposit. Once grads land a job that pays at least $38,000, they pay 10% of their income for 18 months or until they reach $6,600.

The admissions process begins with a brief online form. Candidates then move on to a behavioral interview. For entry-level courses like the flagship bootcamp, students do not need to take a coding challenge to enroll. However, more advanced courses require a technical placement exam.

Ratings and reviews

While The Python Academy is a new program and does not have too many online reviews, so far the reception has been positive. They hold a perfect 5 star rating on Course Report based on only 2 reviews. The first grad described the experience as an “intimate and personalized learning environment.” The grad was also impressed with the job support, raving that “the career center was critical in helping me land my first job!”

The other grad warned that the “12 weeks go by fast” with a demanding pace, but the “nice and helpful” instructors made it manageable. The student also appreciated the career services which helped him land a new Java developer job, stretching beyond their Python brand. The program also hosts positive reviews on their own website.

How does The Python Academy compare to Pathrise?

The Python Academy teaches the skills needed to land a job in data science or analytics. While the curriculum may veer into more advanced material, the flagship courses are designed for complete beginners. Pathrise fellows should already have some background in their field of interest so they can fully benefit from our more advanced technical curriculum.

While The Python Academy offers fairly extensive job support after graduation, the focus is on job-search prep and coaching is still limited. Fellows in the Pathrise program get help with all phases of their job search for as long as needed. Our experienced mentors have already helped 1,000+ people land their dream by working with fellows on their resumes & portfolios, reverse recruiting and cold emails, behavioral and technical interview preparation, salary negotiation, and more.

The Pathrise program is flexible and tailored to the needs of each fellow. Fellows only have 2-4 hours of group sessions per week and can schedule 1-on-1 sessions as needed. With our guidance, fellows see their interview scores double and their application responses triple, lending jobs in only 3-5 months on average.

Like The Python Academy, Pathrise fellows get access to an income share agreement (ISA). However, we never require any upfront payments or deposits.

Pathrise is a career accelerator that optimizes the job search through 1-on-1 mentorship and personalized training. If you are interested in working with one of our mentors to land your dream job, join Pathrise.
