A review of 6nomads as a tech job search tool

Hi, I’m Brian, a former senior software engineer and now software engineering mentor at Pathrise. I have worked with hundreds of software engineers to help them land their dream job. Check out my review of 6nomads as a tech job search tool.

What does 6nomads do?

6nomads matches job seekers with hiring companies to help them land remote tech jobs. Users create a profile and get paired with tech companies in 6nomads’ marketplace for job interviews, which saves them time searching on job boards and applying on their own. Currently, hiring partners include companies like Badoo, Theorem, UC Berkeley Skydeck, and many startups.

The platform requires job seekers to have 3+ years of experience, a Github/Bitbucket/GitLab profile, and a LinkedIn profile or resume. Job seekers must also be prepared to work virtually since the platform hosts mostly remote opportunities. Currently, the platform is seeking product designers, front-end engineers, back-end engineers, data scientists, DevOps engineers, QA engineers, mobile engineers, and game developers.

To apply, job seekers must first solve a 15-minute programming quiz with 20 questions based on their chosen role. Next, the applicant solves a 40-minute coding challenge on HackerRank to test their more general technical skills. Job seekers then record a 3-minute video answering 3 behavioral interview questions. If their application is accepted, the job seeker’s profile is made visible to recruiters and matched with the most relevant companies.

Who is 6nomads for?

6nomads can be helpful for current candidates for the roles they serve who want to simplify their job search with a single application. Job seekers who prefer to avoid networking and sending cold emails could also be a good match for the platform’s tech company matching and introductions.

The platform requires users to have 3+ years of experience, resumes, and a portfolio to apply. Therefore, people seeking entry level roles would not be a good fit.

What does 6nomads cost? How much work is involved?

For job seekers, 6nomads is free. Companies pay $360 to post a job listing. To post unlimited job listings and get support from a talent manager, companies pay $5,000–but only after they actually hire someone. If a company doesn’t fill the position, they pay nothing.

Ratings and reviews

6nomads has received mixed reviews. They hold a 3.5/5 star rating on Product Hunt, where some users described the platform as a “great product” with a “great team behind it!” However, other users were frustrated with the sign-up process and support. After one reviewer signed up, they didn’t hear back for many months and were “still waiting for one of their ‘experts’ to contact me.” Another user described the admissions process as “arbitrary” and wished that “people signing up knew what [6nomads] was actually looking for.’”

While some recruiters felt the platform was “awesome” and “loved the developer task”, another job seeker described the platform as a “shady service that seems to judge product designers based on their Behance and Dribbble profiles.” However, plenty of other users felt it offered a “great service” despite some admissions hiccups.

One user on remote.tools warned that the “sign up process is not robust” and thought that the platform “rejects candidates based on silly issues.” However, the platform also holds a 3.7/5 star rating on Trustpilot based on just 1 review that praised the “nice design of the website.”

Alternatives to 6nomads

If you choose not to join 6nomads, there are still a number of alternative career accelerators and job support resources that can help you start a career in tech.

  • Another platform that matches job seekers to hiring companies through just 1 application is Whitetruffle. Their platform boasts top hiring partners such as Netflix, Postmates, and Asana
  • Triplebyte is a hiring platform for software engineers that streamlines the job search. Like 6nomads, companies work directly with Triplebyte and “apply to you”, seeking out candidates. Learn more about Triplebyte in our review.
  • Similarly, Hired uses machine learning algorithms to match candidates to companies. Candidates are also matched with a talent advocate from Hired to help them prepare for interviews.
  • People seeking a modern talent agency can check out Free Agency. Although the program is completely remote and largely self-paced, they offer 24/7 support. Their talent has been placed at top tech companies like Facebook and Amazon.
  • The startup Underdog.io connects job-seekers with hiring startups. Currently, their services are only available in San Francisco and New York City.
  •  Aspiring startup workers can check out the career accelerator Praxis. However, their full 1-year program is designed for young people looking to land an entry level job at a startup in non-coding roles such as marketing, ops, sales, or customer success.
  • The online interview resources Pramp and Gainlo both pair aspiring software engineers with peers or engineers for mock interviews.
  • Aspiring software engineers seeking mock interview opportunities can also check out Interviewing.io. The platform pairs users with FAANG engineers for mock interviews and extensive feedback. Find out if Interviewing.io is right for your career goals in our review.

How does 6nomads compare to Pathrise?

6nomads is a free platform that pairs job seekers with companies for interviews. While they help connect users to jobs, the platform does not help users stand out in the job search, improve their resume or online profiles, enhance their interview skills, or negotiate higher salaries.

Pathrise is a full-service career accelerator that optimizes the job search through 1-on-1 mentoring. Our personalized program helps with each phase of the job search and focuses on the tactics that will provide the most impact for each individual fellow. Fellows in our program have 2-4 hours of weekly group sessions to master specific skills like resume optimization, cold emailing, technical and behavioral interviewing, negotiation, and so much more.

Pathrise has already helped 1,000+ people land great tech jobs. We represent candidates, meaning we can help connect them with any tech companies, not just the companies on a specific hiring platform.

Pathrise is a career accelerator that works with students and professionals 1-on-1 to help them land their dream job in tech. With our tips and guidance, fellows in our program see their interview scores double and their application responses triple. Fellows often get a 10-20% increase in compensation from salary negotiation alone. If you want to work with any of our mentors to land your dream job, become a Pathrise fellow.
