Software engineering interview question: How do I answer "why did you make that decision?"

In my last phone screen, the interviewer was unsure why my company used machine learning for an AI-enhanced website that uses a simple binary decision tree system. I didn’t make this decision, but I sense that the interviewer was disappointed with my response. How can I frame my answer better?

Take a neutral stance. You can acknowledge that machine learning is less useful if you are changing the website infrequently. More importantly, you can let them know that your team decided to use machine learning so that it would reduce development time in the future. You should give an example of a future project that would make better use of machine learning.
