Additional interviews after the "final round"

I just completed my interview process for a product design role at a startup. Because of COVID, my final interview and presentation were conducted via Zoom. However, I received an email from the recruiter, telling me that the VP of Engineering (newly hired) wanted to speak with me once more. I’ve been open and receptive throughout the process and have accommodated 40% more interviews than I was told that the process would entail. The recruiter asked me for my availability for a 1-on-1 with the VP of Engineering. 2 questions:

  1. How do you think I should respond?
  2. What do you think the VP of Engineering is looking for to give his go-ahead/recommendation?

It is possible that they felt like your presentation could have gone into more detail around the technical plan, so maybe the VP of Engineering wants to learn more about your experience working with other engineers. With larger companies, people sometimes interview you more than promised. In general, this means that you did well enough to impress them, but not well enough to convince them that you were a great fit for the position or company.

In addition, the extra interview might be related to COVID and the shift to remote interviewing. Without in-person presentations and interviews, it can be challenging to assess a candidate’s skills and fit with a company. You should respond positively and let them know you are happy to continue interviewing. Make sure that if any frustrations you might be feeling do not come through when interacting with the company.
